Does a Solar Power Installation require a COC?

A Certificate of Compliance (CoC) must be given once your solar or backup system has been installed.

This document basically verifies that the electrician who completed the installation complies with the laws and guidelines established to ensure a safe installation. It is more than just a piece of paper because it attests to the accuracy of electrical work done at your home.

The Occupational Health and Safety Act, Act 85 of 1993 mandates that the proprietors of a location where electricity is utilized have a current Certificate of Compliance on file.

Insurance companies will also not cover any damages if they arise from a solar installation if there is no CoC available, and this is another great reason to obtain CoC when you have a solar installation.

In Cape Town residents have to disclose their solar systems and provide documentation demonstrating that they are COC compliant. This will soon be the case for all provinces in South Africa, so it is best to get everything in order to ensure you meet the requirements.
